Tonight is the Member's Preview of the New England Photography Biennial at the Danforth Museum of Art in Framingham, MA. Two of my pieces are in the show, and I'm super excited! The show runs through November 13th, and the opening tonight is from 6-8pm at 123 Union Avenue, Framingham, MA.

Next month, I'm in a show at the LAP Gallery in Waltham. It's called Future, and will run from October 5- October 29, with a reception on October 28th. The gallery, which seems really awesome, is at 289 Moody Street in Waltham, MA.

This is all so exciting! 7 photographs from the series Evidence are also currently on display at the New Art Center's satellite gallery in Newton, MA.

Installation Shots from A Community of Artists at the Danforth Museum of Art

And finally, installation shots of my piece at the Danforth Museum of Art in Framingham, MA. I’m super excited (still!) to be included in my second show at the Museum. The Community of Artists show was curated by Katherine French, and this is the second year in a row that Katherine has included me in this exhibit of work by New England artists.

The photos in the first shot (from left to right) are by Esther Pullman, Andrew Kessler, Sarah Pollman (that’s me!). In the background is work from Tim McDonald, Stacy Thomas-Vickory, and Jennifer Day. It’s hard to see the work on the far wall, but it’s by Elizabeth G Flemings, Peggy McClure, and Erik Gehrig. The photo in the second shot is by Steve Miller, and the third is a close up of mine again.

Evidence at Brookline Bank in Newton Highlands, MA

Last month, I received an email from Kathleen Smith, curator extraordinaire, asking me if I could have enough work ready to hang a solo show in three days. Three exhausting days later (framing takes soooo long!) this show went up. It’s at Brookline Bank in Newton Highlands, MA, and is part of the New Art Center’s satellite gallery program.

I love it! Kathleen did such an amazing job hanging it, and I’m excited for my first solo show!

Almost 5 Years Ago ...

…. I picked up my first 4x5 camera in the Large Format class taught by Jim Dow at the Museum School. Wonder what my first photos looked like? Here they are. I came across them while cleaning out my workspace, and remember them vividly. They were four paper negatives that I shot and developed that first week of class, in September of 2006.

A week later, after some trouble shooting, I shot five more paper negatives, which are these little babies. After that, I transitioned into film.

A fun little piece of history! Now, back to organizing this space. Tonight I'm making a new series of "photographs" on vellum; stay tuned!

The first image in a new series of work, 11 Years.

My statement about the work:

The photographs that comprise 11 Years were shot on the eleventh anniversary of my sister’s death, and focus on issues of memory as related to life and loss. Through them, I’m reacting to my sister’s favorite location - the ocean - and relating it to my own emotional reactions to the disparities between lightness and darkness, presence and absence, life and loss. Additionally, I am exploring the manner in which memory fades and changes with time, and documenting my own struggle to remember something so dear, yet so far away, from myself.

The photographs in this series are original, one-of-a-kind prints and are 4x5 inches and mounted to aluminum. This small size, coupled with the visual appearance of floating in space, uncovered, forces viewers to be intimate with the images within the gallery spaces, and experience these disparities on a personal level.

Written on the Body

Written on the Body is a performance that I did back in 2006, and I've been sitting on the footage for quite some time. I've finally edited it together, took out all the fun boob and crotch shots, and added some audio that I created. AND THEN, believe it or not, I uploaded it onto youtube!

Old Work/Evolution

Sometimes, I like looking back on my old work to see the evolution that I have made, as well as my work. These photos were some of the first successful color darkroom prints, and were made back in 2004 or 2005. I was fascinated by this creepy, scary, giant chocolate rabbit that my roommate had, and documented it religiously until she smashed it.

and then this was a design piece I made using these prints as a basis.

Things Lately

1. I showed my work at the Photographic Resource Center at Boston University during their Memory and Autobiography Night the other week. There were two presenters that night: myself and Laura Blacklow, my former professor at the Museum School. It was really awesome to reconnect with Laura, and have her critique my current work -- as always, she was super supportive and helpful, and I was so glad to have her feedback! She pointed out some similarities between my student work and my current work that I haven't noticed, and I'm excited to explore those similarities.

2. I met with Curator and Exhibitions Manager Kathleen Smith (of the New Art Center in Newton) to talk shop about an upcoming exhibition that she wants to put up, including some of my work! Details are still in process, but more information is coming soon.

3. I'm working on scanning some older work that hasn't made it up onto my website yet. It's a series of altered polaroids, and here is a sneak peak of one of them:

4. I'm working on some self-promotional pieces, and branding myself in a continuous manner. It's an ever-evolving process, and seems to take as much time as making work does!

5. I attended a lecture through the New England School of Photography this afternoon, and heard Mary Virginia Swanson speak regarding marketing and business practices as an artist. It's a lot to absorb and filter through!

Photographic Center Northwest!

I'm super pleased and super excited that one of my works has been selected for the 15th Annual Member's Show at the Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle, WA. The show was juried by Crista Dix of wall space gallery in Seattle and Santa Barbara. This center is key in the photography scene on the west coast, and I'm excited that my work will be there, and hopefully get some good west coast exposure for my new series, Topographical Errors.

Museum School Art Sale

Yesterday evening and today I was helping install a show at work, and finding out firsthand how hard it can be! The show was already hung, but needed lighting last night (which took us hours into the evening, as lighting has to be done after hours when there is no sunlight leaking in) and tags today (which take surprisingly forever to hang). I'm super excited to see it in action tomorrow evening, however, at the opening reception.

Teen Program, New Art Center in Newton

Teaching the Teen Program at the New Art Center in Newton has been occupying my time lately, and when I haven't been teaching, I've been in the darkroom printing. When I emerge at the end of the summer from my work-aholic lifestyle, I hope to have some super awesome work to show for it, and have gained more teaching skills!

2. Thomas Prior's Blackrock Tower series, which I stumbled upon via Jen Bekman's 20x200 print edition site. (Thomas also did Urban Outfitters' fall 2009 catalogue; he is a photographer that transitions seamlessly from commercial work to fine art photography.)

3. Gregory Crewdson's Twilight book, which I purchased about a year and a half ago at MASS MoCA.

4. How to make realistic looking fake blood. (This is for a photo I want to take soon, so stay posted to see the results!).

Student Work

Some images that my students have made in my class, Everyday Photography, at the New Art Center in Newton. The class is geared towards teenagers, and strives to give them a working knowledge of photography and digital cameras (they each use their own point and shoot digitals to produce work). Each class is based on showing established photographers' work in slideshows, discussing it, and then critiquing the work that the students did previously. Thrown in there are lectures and demonstrations as well.

I've been very impressed with my students ability to grasp conceptual concepts, and to think creatively and outside of the box. Here are a few images that they've taken over the course of the last two weeks:

Homemade pasta, before and after.

Poolside patterns.

Scale and proportion (think of William Eggleston's Bike photo).

Experiments with different light sources.

The only corrections applied to these photos (by me, prior to posting) are curves (contrast). The rest of the image is completely straight, just as the student created them!

New Work

I've been doing a lot of reading, a lot of writing, and a lot of teaching. I had an awesome portfolio review at the Photographic Resource Center, I had an awesome opening at the Danforth Museum of Art, where two of my works are currently on view, and I have had an awesome time reconfiguring myself and my work to gear up for bigger and better things. This all leaves me with little to no time to write here, but I assure you, good stuff is coming soon.

Printing, Writing, and the Pastel Colors

Today, I'm printing work, and thinking and writing as well:

As I’m printing today, I quickly become horrified at how I print – I have no rhyme, no reason, just intuition and a desire to make beautiful things. Around me, there are charts and graphs, “ring arounds” and the like that show you exactly what 5 more M looks like, what it looks like when you subtract 10Y. Instead of paying attention and abiding by all these rules, I expose the paper, wait patiently as it runs through the processor and then look. It’s too magenta, also a little too cool. Back to the exposing room, where I spin the knobs at the top of the enlarger until they land on their new magical numbers – I’ve added 12 M and subtracted 6 Y. There’s no science. Another exposure, back to the lightbox to look and decide that I need to add another 9M ……

And so goes my printing experience. To make matters worse, another complication of the whole procedure is that when I shot the film, the battery in my light meter was dead. Instead of being a normal human being, and buying a new 9volt, I decided to guess at the exposure times. This doesn’t sound that bad, until I mention that I shoot C-41 4x5 – a 4x5 inch negative that has to be processed by a lab, as it’s too toxic to do it myself.

So, some math: each piece of film is $3. Processing it at Color Services (the premier photographic processing facility in North America) is another $3. So, we are up to $6, and we haven’t printed it yet. More math: I just payed $25 for 50 sheets of 8x10 paper to print on (600 sheets total, plus another 50 of 16x20 and 50 of 20x24 – I’ll allow you to imagine the expenditure!) So, in addition to paying for the darkroom rental at the New England School of Photography, we are up to … how much? It makes me nervous just to write these numbers down.

Imagine what I could buy if I stopped printing. But I digress.

For me, making a negative and making a print is a work of art and art making, as opposed to the science that many photographers find behind their photos. I’m not even sure of the values of reciprocity failure that my film comes with, but I know that it happens: I know that the colors start to shift in beautiful, crazy directions as I allow it to expose for longer and longer. Usually, my exposures range from a minute to about ten, but that isn’t science, either. I might meter for 3 minutes, and then halfway through decide that it doesn’t feel right and expose it much longer than I originally decide to.

So. I often describe myself as a haphazard photographer, but the truth might lie a little closer to the fact that I went to art school, not photography school, that I came to photography by way of painting and drawing, bookmaking and finally alternative processes, and only then the beautiful RA-4 C-prints that I have loved since the first time I made one. So perhaps, I am merely an artist who uses photography, a painter that paints the light with a light sensitive sheet of paper rather than oil colors or watercolors or anything of the like. And as a printer, I take my cues from artists I admire, among which are Jim Dow and Gregory Crewdson. I’m interested in super saturated, super rich color, not the washed out pastels of much contemporary art.

(Recently, I was prowling the Jen Beckman blog for her Hey, Hot Shot! Competition, and I noticed an alarming trend of pastel colored images. Maybe the entire photograph wasn’t pastel, but optically, all the colors in pretty much all the images mixed to form a washed out muted tan color. It made me want to cry.)

So maybe my goal is to produce an image that is an antidote to much contemporary work. I was at a lecture some time ago by the curator from Montserrat College of Art, and she made a remark that she likes images such as the ones created by Shane Lavalette, because they stand as an antidote to the many images she’s seen of abandoned parking lots at night. But, I’d beg to differ: I feel like contemporary photography has shifted in this direction almost exclusively, and what I’m doing has become unique. Yes, my images are of liminal spaces, abandoned spaces sometimes, but ultimately, I believe that they are unique in vision, that they contain something new and something that other artists aren’t doing. They remind me of being young, of being drunk, of the way that the world looks to me at 3 am after a breathtaking rock show, when I am wandering home, drunk on life, on the way that the music has elevated me. And I look around me, knowing that I am the only one out, that these spaces aren’t meant to see people at these hours, but here I am, and I’m not always the only one. And even if I don’t have my camera with me at that moment, I compose the image in my mind, imagine the tilts and the shifts of the camera movements, and stand and stare. It’s just exquisitely beautiful, and ultimately, what in the world is wrong with a little bit of beauty?

Some images of me teaching wheel-throwing over the February break at the New Art Center in Newton. I was teaching it as part of the Teen Program, which includes ceramics, 2-D and 3-D; it is my goal to reinforce basic techniques as well as introduce new ones. I'm looking forward to the summer there, teaching both the Teen Program and an afternoon class entitled Everyday Photography.

Kodak Memories

Our memories as an American culture are preserved on Kodak film, a tradition which, it seems, is dying out. We use these images to tell and retell stories, to remember things we would otherwise forget, and to create new stories we can remember as our own.

In the new series that I am working on, I am taking color reversal 4x5 images that I shot nearly four years ago and juxtaposing them against the handwritten memories that I have of the day they were shot in order to ask some questions regarding what we, as a nation, view as a fool-proof manner of remembering:

1. Are our memories accurate?

2. Do the photos that we take hold any of the inherent truth regarding a moment?

3. Do the photographs mean something different to us than to others?

4. How true are our memories, and how well can these photographic objects hold truth and memory for us?

Teaching/Learning/Syllabi

Over the last few weeks, I have been constructing a syllabus for a new class I'm going to be teaching at the New Art Center in Newton. It's a photography class that will focus on the use of everyday cameras, and creating interesting photographs of the immediate world around us. I'm excited to incorporate teaching into my photography routine, and am looking forward to giving lectures on artists.

Richard Billingham's work is interesting to me because it was created without the intent of being fine art photography: the artist took the photos as source material for paintings. This loose approach is evident in the manner that the photos are constructed, and creates a photograph that is very accessible to the everyday viewer. I like this. So much fine art photography exists in a very inclusive and exclusive group of people, and I love when photographers are able to bridge the gap to include the everyday viewer.

I also love Nan Goldin's work because I feel that she works in a very honest manner as well: it feels so similar to the hoards of hipster photographs I see on flickr. At the same time, it does feel more informed and more purposeful than so much of the digital photography that exist in this age.

And lastly, Robert Frank's The Americans. It remains one of the most influential series of photography, and I've had the chance to see his prints in person at several museums: the MET in NYC, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the De Young in San Francisco. In person, the prints are grainy, but well printed otherwise, and the grain almost serves to remind the viewer of the manner in which they were created.

I found this on the photoblog that Leslie K Brown writes --- she's the former curator at the Photographic Resource Center at Boston University, and I had the pleasure of working with her as an intern when I was in my undergraduate program.

It's a random-phrase generator, and the phrases it comes up with definitely rival those of the critiques I've been a part of. Check it out: The Instant Art Critique Phrase Generator

My favorite response: I find this work menacing/playful because of the way the iconicity of the purity of line brings within the realm of discourse the remarkable handling of light.

The Best Camera

I've been working with an idea first presented by photographer Chase Jarvis -- that the best camera is the one that you have with you.

Here are some images that I've taken in the last few days using my iPhone. They aren't the highest resolution, but I'm intrigued by the low-fi nature of them, of giving up control of the technical aspects of image making and creating something without knowing what the result will be. It reminds me of the days of point and shoot film cameras, although the result is slightly quicker in these images.

All these images were shot on my iPhone and edited in iPhoto. The result is decidedly "normal" and reeks of point and shoot photography in the best possible way.
